Document Summary

Endoplasmic reticulum: protein secretion/sorting, glycosylation, lipid o synthesis, metabolic functions and accumulation of ca2+ o. Lysosome/vacuole: degradation and storage of organic molecules, o accumulation of water (plant vacuoles) o organic molecules o signalling and adhesion. Plasma membrane: uptake + excretion of ions and molecules, cell. These proteins carry nuclear localization signals (nls) that are bound by importins. Er: describe the steps that occur during the co-translational sorting of proteins to the endoplasmic reticulum, 1st stage cotranslational protein localization: sorting. Srp binds to er signal seqeunce and pauses translation. Srp is released and translation resumes and the polypeptide is threaded. Protein is made and released into the er lumen: 2nd stage : if no er retention, then vesicle transport cargo of proteins binds to the receptors in the er membrane. 1: when the vesicle is complete, dynamic pinches the membrane and the vesicle is released. Vesicle fuses with target membrane to deliver protein cargo to its target.
