Concept of race appeared in english language 500 years ago - not until 1700s term began to refer to category of people sharing physical/biological characteristics. Race - important social rather than physiological reality. Define a category of people sharing certain common physical traits deemed to be socially significant. Racialized groups - social process certain groups of people singled out for unequal treatment on basis of physical characteristics, both real or imagined. Ethnicity: socially selected cultural traits, rather than physical ones (eg language, religion, ideology, ancestry, historical symbols) Reality - some overlap b/w concepts of race and ethnicity. Most commonly racialized groups today are those with darker skins. Ethnocentrism: social groups evaluating themselves/way of life better than others. Ethnic chauvinism: hostility towards people based on ethnic group. Racism: hostility towards people people with particular physical characteristics. Prejudice (idea): attitude of dislike/hostility based on membership in particular group. Discrimination (action): denial of equal treatment/opportunities as other social groups.
