Document Summary

Media and images of inequality readings, week twelve. Chapter 44, the future of childhood in the global television market (lemish) Relations between children and television is a global issue because children of all genders/races/religions/classes watch television on a regular basis, enjoy it, and learn from it. The ability for television to both teach and stimulate, but also to numb the senses, develop indifference, encourage destructive behaviors. Biggest debate is that of television violence and how it affects children. Children as active consumers who react to, feel and create meanings. For huge entertainment corporations, children aren"t future citizens, but rather consumers, childhood as a distinct market opportunity requiring strong socialization to the consumer- centered lifestyle. American programming has been criticized for being stereotypical of gender and race, for being irrelevant to indigenous culture, for being too limited in content, and for encouraging wasteful consumerism.
