Decrease gut wall destruction by neutralizing acid & reduce pepsin activity if gastric ph above 5. Antacids may also enhance mucosal protection by stimulating production of prostaglandins. Bowel effects minimized by combining antacid promotes constipation w/ antacid promotes diarrhea. Some antacid contain sodium (exacerbate hypertension & heart failure=avoided w/ these disorders) Highly effective antibiotics w/ low resistance rate.
