Chapter 13: schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders (p. 462-494) Emil kraepelin (1889): provided the current definition, description, and categorization of schizophrenia by combining several symptoms and distinct disorders. Kraepelin also distinguished between manic-depressive illnesses and schizophrenia. Catatonia is alternating immobility and excited agitation. Eugen bleuler (1908): a swiss psychiatrist who coined the term schizophrenia, from the greek word split and mind as he believed that behaviours were due to association splitting. Majority of people believe that it is a dangerous illness, but the majority of cases are not violent or harmful. Those with schizophrenia are less likely to commit crimes than those with a history of violent crimes. Dsm5 criteria: two or more of the following, each present for a significant portion of time during a one month period (or less if successfully treated). If there is a history of autistic spectrum disorder or a communication disorder, the additional schizophrenia diagnosis is made only with significant delusions or hallucinations.
