Document Summary
11. 1 ~ hunger and eating hunger is a psychological behaviour. Both of these processes are essential to maintaining homeostasis. Allostasis is what looks after our future needs: our ability to predict future needs is not prefect which leads to psychological variables like stress, desire to appear attractive, the need to feel in control, etc. Hunger is so you can consume enough nutrients to function but also to complete complex cognitive and emotional factors. On and off switches for hunger are found in the hypothalamus: lateral hypothalamus = on switch, ventromedial hypothalamus = off switch. Note: hunger is not only affected by the hypothalamus. The activity of the hypothalamus is influenced by hormones released due to the energy needs of your body. The hypothalamus detects changes in glucose levels using neurons (glucostats: when glucose is too low, glucostats sends a signal to the hypothalamus saying that energy sources are too low, which then leads to hunger.
