PSYB10H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Exceptionalism, Majority Minority, Slim-Fit Pants
Document Summary
Social in uence many ways people a ect one another, including changes in attitudes, beliefs, feelings, and behaviour resulting from the comments, actions, or even the mere presence of others. Conformity changing one"s behaviour or beliefs in response to explicit (e. g. try drugs) or implicit (e. g. throw out jeans for skinny jeans) pressure (real or imagined) from others. Compliance responding favourably to an explicit request by another person; e. g. doing an errand when your boss asks you to. Obedience in an unequal power relationship, submitting to the demands of the person in authority. Some types of conformity are bad but some are bene cial to ourselves (we don"t have to think hard about every action possible) and to others (it eliminates con ict) We all mimic people automatically; a study of students showed that they would mimic the confederates; tendency to mimic others is stronger when you want to a liate with them and they are well liked.
