Document Summary
Microbiota: the microorganisms of a particular site, habitat or geological period. Microbiome: the microorganisms in a particular environment (including the body of part of the body) The human microbiota is made up of trillions of cells including bacteria, viruses and funguses and they outnumber our own cells tenfold. Biggest population of microbe reside in our gut the gut microbiota. The microorganisms living inside the gastrointestinal tract also known as the gut flora. Amount to as much as 4 pounds of biomass. Microbiota is important in nutrition, immunity and effects on the brain and behavior. Human microbiota comprises the populations of microbial species that live on or in the human body: commensal bacteria, viruses, funguses that call our bodies home. All of the genes inside these microbial cells, meanwhile, are what constitute the microbiome. Microbes have evolved alongside and form an integral part of human life.
