PSYC 2130 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Phallic Stage, Psychosexual Development, Carl Jung
Document Summary
No other psychological approach is at once so influential and so closely identified with a single individual. Freud is one of the most interesting and important people to have lived in the past centuries. He left a cultural legacy of how the stereotypical psychotherapist looks. Freud began his career as a neurologist, he went to france to study hypnosis with jean-martin charcot. Then he moved into the field of psychiatry because a medical profession paid more than theoretical research. Freud found that when his patients talked about their psychological problems, sometimes, that, by itself, was enough to help or cure them. Free association= instructing the patient to say whatever comes to mind, also called the talking cure. This helped because making thoughts and fears explicit by saying them out loud brings them into the open, where the conscious, rational mind can deal with them.
