Bergen found that one third of the women in her sample defined their experiences with their partners as rape, and others redefined their experiences as rape as their relationships progressed. A recent national poll found that 76% of the general public believes husbands use force to make their wives have sex, and 80% believe it occurs often or somewhat often.
