Aggravated rape has been defined as one with extrinsic violence or multiple assailants or no prior relationship between the victim and the defendant: the critical component of this societal image is the stranger status of the perpetrator. Acquaintance or date rape bridges a conceptual gap between stranger rape and wife rape. However, the majority of states still have some exemptions for prosecuting husbands for rape. Physically forced sex by an intimate partner is recognized by some as rape: 72% of fi(cid:374)kelho(cid:396) a(cid:374)d yllo"s sa(cid:373)ple of (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374) (cid:449)ho su(cid:396)(cid:448)i(cid:448)ed se(cid:454)ual assaults (cid:271)(cid:455) thei(cid:396) husbands agreed that their experiences qualified as rape. Bergen found that one third of the women in her sample defined their experiences with their partners as rape, and others redefined their experiences as rape as their relationships progressed. A recent national poll found that 76% of the general public believes husbands use force to make their wives have sex, and 80% believe it occurs often or somewhat often.
