Phonological awareness is knowing and demonstrating that spoken language can be broken down into smaller units (words, syllables, phonemes), which can be manipulated within an alphabetic system or orthography. Phonological awareness encompasses the discrimination, counting, rhyming, alliteration, blending, segmentation, and manipulating of syllables, onset-rimes, and phonemes.
