Proven pressence: the emergence of a feminist politics in cuban hip-hop. Hip hop culture emerged in cuba in the late 80s in which women had a strong presence. Women artists were called raperas and in the late 90s, began to develop a more feminist agenda. Hip hop has allowed these women to voice their opinions on major issues in cuba such as the increased sex tourism and objectification of black women in the region. The tourism industry boomed in cuba after the collapse of the soviet union. However, this has created (cid:373)a(cid:374)(cid:455) pro(cid:271)le(cid:373)s for the cu(cid:271)a(cid:374) (cid:271)la(cid:272)k (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374) (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause of ra(cid:272)ist hiri(cid:374)g"s, (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374)"s household duties, and the tendency to move black families to poorer areas. These problems have forced many black women to become prostitutes to help pay the bills. In 1996, the women formed a feminist group called mag n, which was immediantly shut down by the state.
