Document Summary

Tidal volume (vt): volume of air entering the lungs during a single inspiration ~ volume expired. Inspiratory reserve volume (irv): max amount of air that can be increased above tidal volume value during deepest inspiration. Functional residual capacity (frc): at resting position of the lungs and chest wall when there is no contraction of the respiratory muscles. Residual volume (rv): volume remaining following max expiration. Minute ventilation (ve): total ventilation/minute: ve = tidal volume vt (ml/breath) * respiratory rate (breaths/min) Anatomical dead space (vd): conducting airways don"t permit gas exchange w/ blood, so space within them is dead space. Alveolar inspiration (va): total volume of fresh air entering alveoli/minute: va = (vt vd)* respiratory rate. Understand the concept of partial pressure as it relates to gas exchange throughout the body. Alveolar po2 is lower than atmospheric po2 because o2 flows into pulmonary capillaries. Alveolar pco2 is greater than atmospheric pco2 because co2 flows out of pulmonary capillaries into alveoli.
