Document Summary

Responsible for the working of the brain and the rest of the nervous system through the use of electrical signaling. All animals except sponges have neurons and muscle cells: neurons transmit electrical signals, muscles respond to signals by contracting. Two basic types of nervous systems: nerve net = diffuse arrangement of cells found in cnidarians (jelly sh, hydra, anemones) and ctenophores (comb jellies), central nervous system (cns) = large number of neurons aggregated into clusters called ganglia. Most animals with cns have large cerebral ganglions = brains. Types of neurons in the nervous system: sensory cells are responsible for gathering information regarding the various stimuli in an organism"s environment. Many sensory cells are sensory neurons, carrying information to the brain and spinal cord. Interneurons = cells in the cns which pass signals from one neuron to another. Motor neurons = nerve cells that send signals to effector cells in glands or muscles. Motor neurons + sensory neurons = nerves.
