Document Summary

Nature has many sources of natural ether and alcohols: ex. menthol, vanillin, anethole, ethanol, borneol, eucalyptus. Alcohols = hydroxyl group (oh) bound to a saturated carbon atom: there are primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols, alcohols can also exist on alkenes and alkynes. Phenol = when there is a benzene ring attached directly to an alcohol. Ether = oxygen is bonded to two carbon atoms. Nomenclature of alcohols: hydroxyl group has priority over double and triple bonds for suf x. Usually named [alkyl group] alcohols, ex. methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, etc. Nomenclature of ethers: [alkyl group] ether or [alkyl group #1] [alkyl group #2] ether. Groups being whatever is attached to the ether: more complicated ethers are named differently. And the alkoxy group having priority for numbering: replacement nomenclature. Chapter 11. 2: physical properties of alcohols and ethers. Boiling points: ethers similar boiling points to hydrocarbons with the same molecular weight (mw, alcohols higher boiling points compared to hydrocarbons and ethers.
