Learning objectives: understand the major concepts described and their applications/importance. The study of stability and change over time; it is a field that covers/studies from conception to death; 3 main areas: physical, cognitive, and socio-economic: describe reasons for learning about child development. Charles nelson, neuroscientists and developmental psychologists, has argued that the first 3 years of life are no more important than later periods. He likens early development to building a house. A solid foundation is essential, but the ultimate shape and function of the house depends on adding the walls, the roof, the pipes, and all the rests. Nelson"s focus is on the development of the brain, but his comments could apply to many other areas of child development. Community organizers, community psychologists, and outreach workers are a few of the professionals that focus on preventing problems before they emerge.
