Hemolysis of ovine"s red blood cells: increasing molecular weight of glycols. Hemolysis is the breakdown or disruption of the integrity of the red blood cell (rbc) membrane causing the release of hemoglobin, (samuel o. sowemimo-coker, Hemolysis can be caused by many different factors, such as concentration imbalance. When testing ovine"s rbcs, the different treatments, using the increasing molecular weights of ethylene, diethleyne, and triethylene, would present the effect that molecular weight had on hemolysis time. The null hypothesis is that the average hemolysis time will not be affected by the molecular weight of the glycols. The alternative hypothesis is that the average hemolysis time will increase with the weight of the glycols.
