The french revolution, 1789-1815 (look up slide came in late) Background and beginnings: causes- in 1780"s french gov was in a lot of financial trouble and had a lot of debt bc of war, they had helped to fight on our side in the american revolution. There were groups of people hardly paying any tax at all, like aristocracy. This was the immediate thing to trigger the revolution, how to solve that problem. Enlightenment ideas like human rights, nationalism, etc were also spreading. So the increase of taxes and demand for written constitution were the two main things. A third problem was one of poverty, the gap between rich and poor was widening. All those factories in england from ir were putting french spinners and weavers out of work. 1788-89 shortage of bread, price goes up and this leads to violence. The king is louis xvi his wife is marie antoinette, in summer 1789 things all come to a head.
