France helped the us in their war against britain: still a relatively rich country. The french were scared and demanded weapons to defend themselves from both armies: the arsenal where guns were stored was located in the bastille (which was a royal prison). Influenced by rousseau who said if you love your country, you will do the right thing for everyone. Enemies are arrested and given a quick trial (then death: about 40k were put to death, model iii: nationalist dictatorship- napoleon bonaparte, 1799-1815, with instability, power started gravitating toward the military. It was led by the strongest general of the time, napoleon, who took over the government in 1799. His government lasted until 1815: napoleon was born in corsica, which was owned by france, but was corsican. He worked his way up through the military and staged a number of spectacular operations. In 1796, he led the army across the alps, spreading the revolution to italy.
