Document Summary

Chapter 4- the three major classes of chemical reactions. 4. 1- solution concentration and the role of water as a solvent. Solute- the lesser quantity substance that is dissolved. Solvent- larger quantity substance that does the dissolving: the polar nature of water. Uneven charge distribution- electrons are shared between atoms in a covalent bond. Diatomic atoms- charge is distributed evenly bc they both have the same attraction to the electrons. Bond between different atoms- the sharing is uneven bc one atom attracts the electron pair more strongly. Polar bond- a covalent bond in which the electron pair is shared unequally, so the bond has partially negative and partially positive poles. O end is partially negative, h is partially positive. Indicates partial charge, denoted with a + or - after it. Pos charge is shown in blue, neg charge is shown in red.
