Loss of function, immediate pain, ecchymosis, muscle spasm: xray should be done for bone injury. Mri to show injuries to soft tissues: sprain. Injury to ligaments and tendons surrounding a joint: twisting motion of hyperextension (forcible) of a joint. Injured ligament causes joint instability: 3 degrees, first- tears some fiber of the ligament and mild, localized hematoma formation. Mild pain, edema, and local tenderness: second- partial tearing of the ligament.
