Goal of scientists is to better understand world around them. Psychologists: focus on understanding behavior, cognitive and physiological processes. Psychology refers to the scientific study of the mind. Empirical: grounded in objective, tangible evidence that can be observed over and over again regardless of who is observing. Ex. someone crying behavior difficult to determine. Drilling holes in head lets out bad spirits. Many organizations view media violence as risk for actual violence. Always want to ensure to be informed as possible. Like politicians who benefit from research in making decisions. Research makes difference between facts and opinions. Opinions: personal judgements, conclusions, or attitudes that may or may not be accurate. Scientific method: ideas (theories/hypotheses) are tested against the real world (empirical observations) empirical observations lead to more ideas that are tested against the real world. Most start off with theory well-developed set of ideas that propose an explanation for observed phenomena.
