GLOBL 2 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Seyla Benhabib, Tzvetan Todorov, Eric Hobsbawm
Document Summary
The 1850s as turning point by peter stearns argues that globalization"s origins can be traced back to the mid-1800s and the effect europe had on the world through its modern political ideas and process of industrialization. I disagree with the author that globalization began in the 1800s because globalization can be traced back longer than that. The nation as novelty by eric hobsbawm goes into detail on the european notion of a nation which was essentially created by the political culture of europe. He goes into detail of what is the criteria of nationhood. I find it interesting how nation can mean different things to different people. Citizens, residents, and aliens by seyla benhabib argues that a middle path, or compromise, needs to be found between advocates of a world with no border and rigid notions of national membership. She goes into detail on the issues and benefits of both sides.
