Document Summary
Media use among young people has increased significantly in all forms except reading. Our daily lives and social lives would change in the absence of media: government, politics, business, and other large institutions would also change. We become aware of the learned nature of our beliefs when they are questioned / contradicted or when we travel to experience a different culture: we are socialized in the ways and norms of our particular culture. Media is often the bridge between people"s private lives and their relation to the public world. Each role we occupy brings a set of expectations about our actions. Different groups expect the media to play different roles. Social structure: any recurring pattern of social behavior. Media in democratic societies can exert a constraining influence over other social institutions. Purpose in society: agents of socialization, sources of information, propaganda mechanisms, agents of legitimacy generate mass belief.
