Document Summary

Suggests all organisms are related by a common ancestor and changed over time by the process of natural selection. This book was considered very radical because it went against many of the popular typological beliefs that went along with the bible for hundreds of years. This went heavily against the bible along with the lack of chromosomal knowledge to back up evolution. It also went against the prevailing science of the time. Briefly discuss the inheritance of acquired characteristics and identify its proponent. This assumed that characteristics of species changed based on use/disuse of the body part. Increased use/disuse would result in development/deterioration of the body part in the offspring respectively. Populations evolve, since any sufficient changes occur in the population. A single individual does not evolve because we live and die with the same genes. For a drastic example, one person does not go to sleep as a monkey and wake up as a dolphin.
