Achilles wants to fight, not deal with practical matters. Gifts and briseis given to achilles- achilles not concerned with the gifts (acting emotional and illogical) When achilles is left with the king, he becomes angry and realizes the foolish cause of the fighting (helen) The book ends with a convo between achilles and his horses. One of the horses reminds achilles of his eminent death. Apollo tricks achilles, leading him away from the city. Priam has opened the gates so the trojans can retreat. When achilles finds out, he runs back to the wall where he finds hector. Priam and hecuba plea with hector to return to the city (similar to andromache) Hectors soliloquy- rehearses the reasons why he cannot return to troy. Shame is a driving force in his decision. In the face of achilles approach- hector"s resolve changes, and he turns and runs. Highlights his humanity, makes him relatable for being fearful.
