MEDRADSC 1B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Tunica Vaginalis, Inguinal Canal, Vaginal Process
Document Summary
Prostate: adds alkaline fluids; ph at 6 for fertilization. Bulbourethral gland: alkaline mucous (for acidic nature in the urethra) Testes develop in abdominal cavity during fetal life (gains entrance normally through the inguinal canal into the scrotum) Descend into the scrotum during the 7-9th month of gestation (occurs during pregnancy) Most common in premature & low birth weight infants. Spontaneous descent rarely occurs after 6 months of age. Short spermatic cord or the inguinal canal is too thin. Infertility bc seminiferous tubules start to degenerate when left in the abdominal cavity; spermatogenesis is impaired. Gonadal arteriography & venography; using contrast into circulation, if testis is in the abdomen, we should see the contrast going through the gonadal vasculature; is a risk for the child (reaction) Orchiopexy; removal of testicle in abdomen (surgery is done at age 6 months-2 yrs; want to do it before child reaches 2 yr)
