Si examines families at micro level and how people in their everyday interactions actively create family. Family isn"t an external social phenomena, but people create mean of family through symbols etc. Interested in use of symbols and how they are understood by people and how individual subjectivity are informed by family roles. Critics place all emphasises on micro level and not on macro level and social structures of families. Historical evidence of which tells us that families are socially constructed and shaped by larger forces. Nuclear families in privatized household is a new social creation (wasn"t not always norm) Nomadic peoples in early society, families were in large groups of people not privatized cause were all hunting and gathering together. Living immersed in wider group, where care giving is shared. Woman gathered food, men hunted woman"s roles were very important and highly valued. Thousand years later woman"s started to settle and agriculture became a think.
