If you show an object that is crime related, people whose black people schemas were activated would connect quicker. Standard: crime black spreading/bidirectional method: handcuffs black (spreading activation) Activate black schema to crime schema but also activate crime schema to black schema (black face dot) A more stereotypical black face activated the crime schema more quickly. There is a lot of distortion and bias in how we process things. A shortcut to judgment or choice; reach a decision in a simple fashion with very little information. Early work focused on how distortion was motivational or ego-defensive. Some are controlled (type 2) but most are automatic (type 1) Don"t want to bother finding out information so you use a schema- based inferences. If the schema is accurate, it"s good (obviously) but not good if the person is an oddball. How schemas are applied to heuristics and taking cues. Fast and frugal heuristics - take the best.
