PSY 204 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Prefrontal Cortex, Metamemory, Numeracy
Document Summary
Working memory (short-term memory) improves markedly during middle. Organization (categorization, grouping, ideas, object or words into meaningful units) Elaboration (embellishing information to make it more memorable) Speed with which individuals carry out cognitive processes. Processing speed is significantly influenced by factors such as automatic processing, also called automaticity. School-aged children learn an incredible amount of basic information: they acquire literacy and numeracy skills, historical and geographical facts and information about animals, plants and planets, to name a few areas. Refer to a variety of cognitive skills that enable the individual to plan and organize, make decisions, think abstractly and solve new problems. The prefrontal cortex is involved in executive functioning and is thought to synchronise neural activity widely distributed in the brain. An important control process is metacognition (allows a person to evaluate a cognitive task) Metamemory (monitor the effectiveness of their memory strategies and diagnose memory problems)
