The method of loci is one of the oldest mnemonic devices. First, learn a list of places, such as my desk, the door of my room, the corridor, . then link each of these places to an item on a list of words or names, such as a list of the names of nobel peace prize winners. When remembering an event, you start with details you remember clearly, and fill in gaps. When we try to retrieve memories, we reconstruct based on surviving memories combined with expectations. Your memory for routine activities your breakfast, lunch or dinner for example from the past week can be reconstructed with little effort. But they fade rapidly unless something unusual happened. If your family all got sick after a meal, you"ll remember that meal in detail for longer than usual. If you met a new love interest while at dinner with friends, this event will be memorable and easily reconstructed.
