Document Summary

Chapter 8 social influence: the phenomena of conformity and compliance. A change in behavior due to perceived influence of other people (people on a similar level as us) Can be due to: normative influence - the desire to be accepted/approved of. Not sure what is objectively correct, so we rely on what other people do to decide. Ex: who wants to be a millionare: contestants would answer multiple choice questions if they found a question too difficult, they could call a lifeline or poll the audience, or have 1 or 2 answers eliminated. Norm - rule or standard for what is acceptable, appropriate, or correct in terms of judgment, value, perception, belief, behavior. Norms about eye contact, conversation, touching, etc. Stuff we don"t think about but that influence us every day. Video: norms we feel pressure to comply with them. Never suggested that the group must agree people do it spontaneously.
