Document Summary

Chapter 7: you can see the process as the artist works and thinks throughout a composition. When artists draw, they often correct their first lines, which can be seen in the finished product: aka pentimenti (reconsideration, connotes regret or remorse, may be exploring composition, emotion or expression. Pontormo has a drawing where you can still see the first figure he drew (a standing woman: he changed the subject altogether, but left the first figure, this creates volume and support for the dying christ. Raises the question of how did this even happen? . With drawing, you can see the lines, the amount of trial and error, and the changes that were made: art isn"t magic, it takes time. Typically go over an old line with a new, darker one to distinguish the two. Tweak and push the boundaries until it feels right. Drawing on the computer enables cut and paste, moving different parts of the piece, and efficiency.
