Document Summary
Soc271 lecture 10 - how societies define deviance. Consensus theories: society is possible because we have consensus that creates. Consensus: agreement of the majority on large issues, such as underlying norms and norms values in society. Example: we all agree murder is bad, yet there is murder. Conflict theories: conflict and disagreement on the important values and norms. Society becomes possible because one group"s strong enough to overpower all others. Or different views find ways to compromise, ways to share. Now starting to compromise, though not fully agree. Theory allows us to ask questions, and know how to interpret the answers. Theory: systematic statement about how things work, how the physical world. Theories have to be stated in a falsifiable way runs. It has to be able to be proven wrong, potentially. Disproving evidence should be able to prove theory wrong. Research is done to either provide support for a theory, or prove it wrong.
