Document Summary

Review of chapters 1, 2, 3, & 5. The scientific inquiry into mental processes and behavior. First assumption is that we have a subconscious. Repressed trauma and inappropriate instances are suppressed into the unconscious. The impulses we want to repress are libido (sexual impulses) and thanatos (angry or violent impulses) The longer you repress your instincts, they more they want to be released. If we want to grow, we want to eventually achieve self-actualization. There are no bad people, but bad things that happen to people. Only focused on behaviors that you can see. Emphasis on the relationship between mind and body. Focuses on the nervous system, and things like chemicals in the brain. Many of our behaviors are a result of evolution. Behaviors that are helpful to our survival, influence our behaviors today. Influences of early upbringing, family, society, etc. Differences between relationships in family, between races, gender, etc. No one really believes in this theory anymore.
