Document Summary
When cells do not process sugar - diabetes. Used to be referred to as the adult onset after 40 (not anymore) No longer called that because it is seen in younger individuals. We will focus extensively on type ii - this is caused by lifestyle. Glucose - a source of fuel for the cells. Food has glucose, and when it is consumed it is then carried in the blood and delivered to the cells. Every cell in the body needs glucose. Excess sugar is stored in the liver and the muscles. The liver delivers sugar to the body and is the sugar storage for the entire body. Sugar enters the body through the small intestine. Release later (released by glucagon) the muscles. We need a hormone called insulin to deliver the sugar. Alpha cells in the pancreas release glucagon. Beta cells in the pancreas release insulin. The pancreas is responsible for regulating sugar in the body (homeostasis)
