PHI 3000C Lecture 1: Metaphysics notes - aristotle
Document Summary
Aristotle refers to metaphysics as a science that studies beings. Metaphysics is the study of the nature of reality. We are focusing on understanding the nature of things. The ability to form arguments and the ability to make judgements. An action we use to discover what reality is. The most profound metaphysics philosophers are plato and aristotle. To understand the nature of things, we refer to this as an ideal form or idea. For aristotle, truth is a way of describing the essence of things. Matter and form can be in different forms. Other things do depend on substance, but substance is not depending on other things. Matter is what things are made out of. A formal cause is an idea that brings change. Final cause represents the purpose of the cause. To cause something means nringing potency to actuality.
