PSY 324 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Brown Adipose Tissue, Preoptic Area, Adipose Tissue
Document Summary
Homeostasis: a tendency to maintain a variable within a fixed range, or to maintain a set point. It is the property of a system including the human body: regulatory mechanisms in place to ensure homeostasis, physiological and behavioral activities, negative feedback: regulatory process that reduces discrepancies from the set point, essential to regulatory system. Basal metabolism: energy used to maintain a constant body temp while at rest: metabolism within brown adipose tissue, 2/3 of total energy dedicated to maintaining basal metabolism. Endothermic: controlling temp by the body"s physiological mechanisms: ex/ humans, shiver if cold, sweat if warm. Ectothermic: controlling temp by relying on external sources of heat or cooling: ex/ lizards. Anterior hypothalamus & preoptic area (po) of the hypothalamus. Receives input from temperature receptors in the skin, in the organs, and in the hypothalamus. Fever = body constantly fighting bacteria, the brain is telling the body to increase temp to fight off bacteria.
