Document Summary

Macromolecules- large molecules found in all living things o o. Architecture of a large molecule plays an essential role in its function. Section 5. 1: macromolecules are polymers, built from monomers. Polymers- a long molecule consisting of many similar or identical building blocks linked by covalent bonds o. Repeating units that serve as the building blocks of a polymer are monomers. Some also have a function of their own. Connected by a reaction in which two molecules are covalently bonded together, with the loss of water molecule (dehydration synthesis) One monomer contributes a hydroxyl group while the other provides a hydrogen. Disassembled by hydrolysis- a process that is essentially the reverse of the dehydration reaction. Bond between monomers is broken by the addition of a water molecule, with a hydrogen from water attaching to one monomer and the hydroxyl group from water attaching to the other. Various enzymes attack the polymers, speeding up hydrolysis.
