Greeks settled in southern italy and sicily: area came to be known as magna graecia (greater greece) Greeks spread their culture to etruscans and romans: romans later dominate the peninsula. Romans establish a rule by the senate. 800 bc etruscans developed in north-central italy. Their cultures and traditions laid the foundations of roman cultures and traditions. 750 bc etruscans expanded southwards into central italy: encounter rome, which was then a small collection of villages. 1000 bc 800 bc romans settles east of tiber. Lots of myths concern the history of rome: the senate elected 7 kings after romulus. Son of etruscan king tarquin rapes lucretia, a virtuous roman wife. Lucretia demands that etruscan kings be overthrown and commits suicide. 509 bc last etruscan kings overthrown: end of monarchy, beginning of republic. 6th century bc hereditary monarchy controlling rome overthrown by aristocrats: leads to the development of the senate.
