Background and context

Neurons are the fundamental and individual units of the human nervous system. The electrical and chemical changes that occur within and across the axon membrane is called the nerve impulse. The nerve impulse is also known as an action potential. The nerve impulse or the action potential requires a concentration gradient, maintained with the help of a sodium-potassium pump and charge difference. This charge difference has a crucial role in initiating a nerve impulse. A synapse is a portion between the axon of the presynaptic cell and the dendrite of the postsynaptic cell.
