Background and context

Adrenal glands are situated above both kidneys. The adrenal gland is composed of an adrenal medulla and adrenal cortex. The adrenal cortex produces two major hormones that are glucocorticoids like cortisol and mineralocorticoids like Aldosterone. The adrenal medulla produces epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Cortisol produced by the adrenal cortex regulates carbohydrates, fat, and protein metabolism which increases blood glucose levels. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent.
