UNCC300 Justice & Change
Week 3
-Community Engagement > agenda aims to create hope and belief in a better tomorrow
for individuals and communities
•Beyond Disadvantage (promoting social inclusion)
•Beyond Borders (national borders not an issue in capacity to help)
•Beyond Differences (promoting cohesion)
-E.g. Orange Sky > human dignity for homeless, washing clothes and showering // e.g.
Law Asia > lawyers working pro bono for individuals and communities in Asia // E.g.
Mercy Ships > bringing ship outside international waters but close enough for citizens to
get health care on the ship
-Caritas > Nepal > targeting women to educate them (to read) and give them skills (to
farm, to run a business) > because political regimes always first cut funding education
for women because the males in power are threatened by an educated woman > have
programs for bringing human trafficked girls back home with a chance to rebuild their
lives
-How can your prospective career in your industry help provide for developing countries?
•Education > teach the children so they can have a better quality of life and to also
become teachers themselves to help them
•Arts > get them to make art and sell it and bring money back into the community
•Science > help with farming and earthquakes
•IT > give them internet connection to connect them to the rest of the world
-Global Community engagement > everybody can be involved regales of profession >
global organisations function because of the breadth of skills of volunteers/employees
-Initiative on a local level creates toys and dolls to reflect children living with disabilities >
parents noticed that kids with disabilities couldn’t see themselves reflected in the toys
-Op Ed > punchy statement > persuasive not argumentative > all points that help your
statement dont mention the other perspective > back it up with data, stats and quotes
from sources > best examples of op ed are letters to the editor in newspaper (dont use
dail telegraphy, maybe used the herald or the Melbourne age or the Australian or
London times and New York Times > better quality of letters to the editor)
-Up to state data > websites then journals then books
-25th of April NO CLASS
