-Advocacy > recognising you need to speak for those who cant / working towards
changing the circumstances for people / turning knowledge into an action

civil unrest + biblical history rooted in this region > Assad Family dictators of Syria and
have held power since 1971 and play a key role in the Syrian civil war > 4.9 million
refugees as of 2011
-Australian population is basically made up of refugees > WW1, WW2, Vietnam War,
Korean War, Middle East Conflicts
Vietnam War > Circumstances? 80,000 Vietnamese to flee to Australia because of the
war > Policies in Place? 1982, the Australian and Vietnamese governments agreed on
an orderly migration program, emphasising family reunion, and two-thirds of arrivals
over the next few years were women > Attitudes of Australians? It was the first
televised war so Australians were more sympathetic and welcoming, and they were
very hard working so they assimilated into community through their ability to provide
their skills in the workforce and businesses. > Influences of these attitudes? It was a
war the occurred after the abolition of the White Australia Policy so people were more
open to multiculturalism. > Who advocates refugees from Vietnam? Church groups,
Qantas sponsored jets to fill planes with people to bring them to NSW and VIC,
orphan babies, Gough Whitlam was instrumental in how progressive australia was
towards refugees
-97% of refugees are found to be true in seeking asylum
