- Leads us to accept our responsibility to advocate on behalf of those who have been
silenced or, or have had their needs dismissed.
Laudato “i
- An encyclical written by Pope Francis that calls for a broad cultural revolution to
confront the environmental crisis. Some of the takeaways are:
o The poor are disproportionately affected by climate change.
o Less is more.
Only live with what we absolutely need.
o Catholic social teaching now includes teaching on the environment.
o The spiritual perspective is now part of the discussion on the environment.
o Discussions about ecology can be grounded in the Bible and church tradition.
o Everything is connected including the economy.
o Scientific research on the environment is to be praised and used.
o A Global dialogue and solidarity are needed.
o A change of heart is required.
o Widespread indifference and selfishness worsen environmental problems.
The Montara Oil Spill
- An explosion at the Montara oil rig occurred on 21 August 2009.
- Despite repeated attempts to seal the leak, oil continued to flow over two months,
until 3 November 2009.
- Montara oil spread to the waters around West Timor and Rote Nado, a small island
which is off the tip of West Timor.
- The people of this Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara rely of fishing and
seaweed farming for their livelihood
- There have been claims of environmental damage and harm to the health and
livelihood of the people of this region and some groups have been sued for
negligence.
- Was a major environmental crisis. Did not get much coverage in the news.
- Had ongoing effects.
- The fishing and seaweed industry in Indonesia has tried to be restored. In the last 8
years since the spill, it has been restored 45%.
- Led to the creation of Laudato Si.
