What is intelligence?
- Three themes:
o The capacity to learn
o The total knowledge a person has acquired
o The ability to adapt successfully to new situations and to the environment
o Intelligence is measured though an intelligence quotion
How is it measured?
- Binet – French psychologist. Developed method
- Measured school achievement and intellectual skill

What is special education?
- Special education refers to the system of programs and services that is provided in
most education systems for children who have difficulties learning in the regular
classroom context

- Readiness is a term used to describe a child who has prior knowledge or experiences
needed to make a link between the known and the unknown
- E.g. knowledge of print – the ability to read
Underachievers and supplementary programs
- Supplementary programs are used in schools to help children who are
underachieving (e.g. reading recovery, ELF, and PAL program)
- Compensatory programs – programs that help students who are neglected or
experience poverty
Learners with special needs
- Leaners with special support needs
