Muscles of the Thigh
5.1 Identify, describe the attachments of and deduce the actions of the muscles of the thigh:
Anterior
sartorious
PA: anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS)
DA: medial surface of the upper part of the shaft of the tibia, medial collateral ligament of the
knee
A: flexes thigh at hip, laterally rotates thigh, flexes leg at knee
rectus femoris
PA: anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS), ilium just superior to the acetabulum
DA: tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament
A: extends leg at knee, flexes thigh at hip
vastus lateralis
PA: upper lateral part of the intertrochanteric line, lower border of the greater trochanter,
lateral side of the gluteal tuberosity, upper half of the lateral lip of the linea aspera
DA: tibial tuberosity via the tendon of rectus femoris and the patellar ligament, blends with the
iliotibial tract
A: Extends leg at knee, stabilises knee
vastus medialis
PA: lower medial part of the intertrochanteric line, medial aspect of the proximal femoral
shaft, medial lip of the linea aspera, upper two thirds of the medial supracondylar line
DA: tibial tuberosity via the tendon of rectus femoris and the patellar ligament, medial condyle
of the tibia
A: extends leg at knee, stabilises patella
vastus intermedius
PA: upper two thirds of the anterior and lateral surfaces of the femur
DA: tibial tuberosity via the tendon of rectus femoris and the patellar ligament
A: extends leg at knee
Posterior group (hamstrings)
biceps femoris (long head and short head)
PA: medial part of the ischial tuberosity and sacrotuberous ligament (long head), lower half
lateral lip of the linea aspera extending to the upper part of the lateral supracondylar line of
the femur (short head)
DA: head of the fibula
A: extends thigh at hip, flexes leg at knee, laterally rotates leg
Semitendinosus
PA: medial aspect of the ischial tuberosity
DA: medial surface of the upper part of the shaft of the tibia
A: extends thigh at hip, flexes leg at knee, medially rotates leg
Semimembranosus
PA: lateral aspect of the ischial tuberosity
DA: posteromedial surface of the medial tibial condyle
A: extends thigh at hip, flexes leg at knee, medially rotates leg
Medial group
Gracilis
PA: anterior body of the pubis, inferior ramus of the pubis
DA: medial surface of the upper part of the shaft of the tibia
A: adducts thigh, flexes leg at knee, medially rotates leg
Pectineus
PA: superior ramus of the pubis
DA: pectineal line of the femur
A: adducts thigh, flexes thigh at hip, medially rotates thigh
adductor magnus
PA: ischiopubic ramus extending to the inferior part of the ischial tuberosity
