NEUR3112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Neural Coding, Calcium Imaging, Lateral Inhibition
Document Summary
Light stimulation in certain regions will cause neuronal response -> receptor field. Turning off a light in the surround -> excitation. This is just an example of response modulation. Features the neuron is interested in -> in this example, light in the centre, and no light in the surround. There are also neurons interested in lines in particular orientations. Lines and change in contrast -> there is a lot of information to extract from the environment. These neurons extract a highly informative features of the visual world. Calcium concertation -> proxy for spiking activity in the neuronal cells. Calcium imaging and multi-electrode array recording allow us to study how. Multiple electrodes -> increases efficiency, but also collection of information from 2 neurons at the same time can see if they give synergistic information or redundant information. Can see neurons that are there, but don"t contribute to coding, and are silent.
