NEUR3112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Isotopic Labeling, Retinotopy, Proline
Document Summary
M-cell and p-cell inputs remain largely segregated in v1. In addition to the radial connections shown, there are also horizontal connections. In addition to the retinotopic map, there are several other kinds of maps or organisational patterns found in v1: Radiolabelled proteins anterogradely transported down optic nerve & tract to lgn. Labelled proteins jump 1 synapse in lgn and are transported down optic radiation to layer 4c of v1. Autoradiography reveals alternating bands of inputs from the two eyes. Inputs from each eye are segregated -> left eye white, right eye black for example. Radial projections to other layers (4b, 2/3) maintain ocular dominance with some blurring at the boundaries. Other radial connections give ocular dominance columns across v1. Cross connections blur the lines between the columns. Stain for cytochrome oxidase, a mitochondrial enzyme for cell metabolism (-> activity marker") Blobs (or patches ) = pillars of staining across layers 2/3, 5 & 6.
