WEEK 9- Intelligence
Intro
- Not knowledge but imagination
- I know I know nothing
- “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills”
- “metal quality they consists of the abilities to learn form experience, adapt to new situations,
understand and handle abstract concepts, and use knowledge to manipulate one’s
environment”
- Piaget: an evolving, biological adaptation of the outside world, reorganised of psychological
structures as a consequence of the interaction with the environment, adaption
- It is not one thing
Theories
- Not one thing
- More things, unknown what is part of intelligence
Gardner’s multiple intelligence
- Howard gardner
- No single intelligence
- Biological and cross-cultural data
- 7 types of intelligence:
oLinguistic- the capacity to use language (spoken and written, learn language)
oLogical-mathematical- capacity for mathematics, logical and analytic reasoning
oSpatial- capacity for recognising and manipulation of patterns in space
oMusical- capacity for music and musical appreciation
oKinaesthetic/bodily- capacity for physical tasks
oInterpersonal- capacity to understand the thoughts and feelings of others
oIntrapersonal- the capacity to look inward and have self-indulgent
- Problem- how do you measure musical, kinaesthetic ones
The CHC model
- Factor analytic intelligence
- Horn and cattell: all different manifestation of intelligence reflect two broad capacity:
oFluid intelligence- (gf) ability to solve novel problems, absent any prior experience
(innate)

oCrystallised intelligence- (gc) ability to apply learned skills, knowledge and experiences
(education)
- General f or c, this is because there is overlap between them
oVisual processing (gv)
oAuditory processing (ga)
oQuantitative processing (gq)
oSpeed of processing (gs)
oReading and writing (Grw)
oShort-term memory (gsw)
oLong-term storage and retrieval (Glr)
- All easily measured
Measurement
- Iq test
- IQ- intelligent quotient, a measure of reasoning or cognitive ability
- Binet-simon scale
- Ratio iq, age (mental) and chronological age
- Diviation iq- deviation, scored individual against age-controlled norms
- Normal group
- Based on CHC
- Wechsler scales
- Mean 100, 15 sd
What do IQ test measure
- Cognitive ability, not intelligence
- Because they are narrow
- They are typically specific
- Mainly:
oVerbal (crystallised intelligence-learnt about it)
o non-verbal/visuospatial (fluid intelligence)
oworking memory
oprocessing speed (time taken, easier to do simple task, cognitive efficiency)

Document Summary
The ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills . Metal quality they consists of the abilities to learn form experience, adapt to new situations, understand and handle abstract concepts, and use knowledge to manipulate one"s environment . Piaget: an evolving, biological adaptation of the outside world, reorganised of psychological structures as a consequence of the interaction with the environment, adaption. More things, unknown what is part of intelligence. Problem- how do you measure musical, kinaesthetic ones. Horn and cattell: all different manifestation of intelligence reflect two broad capacity: fluid intelligence- (gf) ability to solve novel problems, absent any prior experience (innate, crystallised intelligence- (gc) ability to apply learned skills, knowledge and experiences (education) General f or c, this is because there is overlap between them: visual processing (gv, auditory processing (ga, quantitative processing (gq, speed of processing (gs, reading and writing (grw, short-term memory (gsw, long-term storage and retrieval (glr)
